Did You know…Research shows berries may protect against mental decline? Blueberries and strawberries may boost your aging brain. As we get older, damaged cells accumulate in the brain, which can lead to age related diseases such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. That’s where berries come in. Polyphenols, which give berries their deep red or blue hue, activate proteins that clean up damaged cells. They do this by breaking down and recycling the toxic chemicals linked to age related mental decline. These berried treasures do more than help your mind. Blueberries rank first among fruits for their antioxidant powers and strawberries are tops in vitamin C. Sweet acai berries contain high levels of omega 6 and 9 fatty acids, thought to play a role in cardiovascular health. So when you want to increase your berry intake just add them to cereal, puree them into sauces, or just eat them fresh. “Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face continually.” I Chronicles 16:11
OUR CHURCH- Banners – Part 1
Many of the banners hanging from above in our Gathering Room were made by Alma Jean Fisher. She has made others as well. Vicar John Haldeman, Jr., took the time to explain to me what each represents so I could pass along the information to you.
As you stand in the Gathering Room and face the wooden cross, you can look up and to your left to see the banner with the green background which is used on the Sundays after Pentecost. The symbol in the center is a Greek monogram--the Greek Letters Chi “X” and Rho “P” which is Greek for “Christ.” In Hebrew, that means “anointed one.” Egyptian Pharaohs were anointed with crocodile oil; all Hebrew Messiahs were anointed with olive oil. (Jesus was not considered the only Messiah; the Jewish Kings were also considered Messiahs.) At Baptism, we are anointed with Oil of Chrism when we are blessed with the sign of the Cross with olive oil that has been blessed by the Bishop. The rite of Baptism signifies that we have been claimed by Jesus as one of His own forever. The vessel at the top of the banner contains Oil of Chrism. The Chi Rho is rooted in a plant with leaves, just like you see on the banner, and this signified that Jesus is rooted in the stem of Jesse, and we have become the branches.
The banner to the right of the green banner is a Marriage Banner. The Cross represents Christ with the backdrop of the white shield, the two candles stand for the couples who are having their marriage blessed by the church, and the two entwined gold circles indicate the bride and groom becoming one in Christ.
[Next week continues with information on the banners in the Gathering Room]
MAKE IT SIMPLE
Simplifying your life can give you more time and energy to spend on your spiritual journey.
Single-task. Multi-tasking is more complicated, more stressful, and generally less productive. Instead, do one task at a time.
Got a “Make It Simple” hint that works for you. Share it with the congregation by dropping off a note in the office or e-mailing it to zionlcof@ptd.net.

What is Happening with our Historical Documents?
Can anyone give me some information on the following terms: Weather Bags, Dust Puffs, Box Party, Vanishing Party, and Conundrum Party? Also, the Margaret Banning Bible Class saved old nylon stockings and gave them to the Lutheran Home. What did the Home do with them? If you have any interesting stories from Zion's past; please write them down for me or call me at 668-2699.
Thanks to those of you who filled me in on Gertrude Rex; she is now much more than a name I came across in our historical papers. Thanks also to those who filled me in on many of the questions I've previously asked. So, besides gathering and compiling our church history for display during tours and events, what am I doing with all that information? My plan is to publish a book with the proceeds, less expenses, to go towards the Exterior Repairs for our church.
The next logical step is two-fold--naming the book and covering the costs to publish it. That is where YOU come in. For a donation of $5, you can submit your suggested Title for our church history book. A box will be placed in the Gathering Room for a few weeks to receive those. You can put in as many suggestions as you'd like as long as each suggestion is accompanied with $5. Put your name on the paper and your suggested book title. After we've gotten a large number of suggestions, a Committee will look over the choices and make the announcement. We are all part of Zion's history, just by being a member; here's your chance to help with the Zion book AND at the same time help to restore our landmark church.
