Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church
A congregation of 500 + confirmed, communing members, builds its life and ministry on the Ministry of Word and Sacrament and, from there, we reach out to our community and our members with ministries of education, fellowship and service.
Zion was officially begun in 1876 as a congregation of the Ministerium of Pennsylvania and continues today as a congregation of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.
Our first building “The Little Church on the Schuylkill” had 153 members. That building still stands at the corner of Mauch Chunk St. and Schuylkill Ave. and is now the home of the Italian Club. Our current building was begun in August, 1927, and dedicated on September 23, 1928. Our magnificent sanctuary however was not complete until 1948. On the day of dedication it was called “a towering edifice which stands out as a testimony of a devoted pastor and people to their God.”
As a Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Americas we confess that the Church is a people created by God in Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit, called and sent to bear witness to God’s creative, redeeming and sanctifying activity in the world.
We invite you to explore that mission with us, to be nurtured at the Lord’s Table and to be sent out in the Lord’s name.
